Sylvia's Place Queer Youth Emergency Shelter

Sylvia's Place operates from 11pm to 8am, 365 days a year.

It is New York City's ONLY EMERGENCY shelter for LGBTQ youth. To make arrangements to enter the shelter, call Kate Barnhart, Director of "Sylvia's Place," at 212.629.7440.ext 14. No one will be turned away the first night, but space limitations may necessitate a referral thereafter.

We rely on the generosity of volunteers and supporters to supply an evening meal, toiletries, clothing, etc. Socks and underwear are especially welcome as they are always in short supply!

The shelter is run by the Director and a skilled team of overnight staff and, in partnership with St. Vincent's Hospital, offers a weekly on-site medical clinic for shelter youth and other kids in need. If a child is in need of physical or mental health attention and not part of Sylvia's Place, make sure you contact Kate as listed below prior to Wednesday mornings.
